For more than fifty years, NCBA's CLUSA International Program has worked in developing countries to economically empower individuals and communities through the development of effective, sustainable group businesses, community-based organizations and democratic practices. Cooperative development, both at home and abroad, is a critical component of NCBA's mission. Since 1953 when our work began in India, NCBA has managed over 200 long-term projects in 53 countries and has performed over 1,000 short-term consultancies in 79 countries. Working side-by-side with cooperatives and community members, CLUSA is helping to lift people out of poverty.

In 2006, CLUSA operated in 12 countries and managed a grants and contracts portfolio valued at US$ 20 million. NCBA/CLUSA is a 501 (c)(6), not-for-profit corporation, incorporated under the laws of the District of Columbia and is registered with AID/FHA/PVC as a Private and Voluntary Organization (PVO).

Committed to building local capacity to implement change, CLUSA's international projects extend training, management and technical advice to:

  • rural farmer associations and cooperatives on agricultural production, marketing and natural resource management.
  • rural community development organizations by providing small-scale credit and training to entrepreneurs and micro-businesses; and
  • community-managed service providers, including village-level health programs, community managed natural resources and civil society organizations/non-governmental organizations.
