Our Expertise

CLUSA's decades of experience working with member-owned businesses and other village-based organizations have clearly demonstrated that meaningful participation by communities in the design, planning, and implementation of development activities is critical to ensuring the relevancy and long-term sustainability of those activities.

The CLUSA Approach

Twenty years ago, NCBA began experimenting with an innovative approach to cooperative and community-based development. The CLUSA Approach is founded on the belief that our clients should be the decision-makers and that our role is in providing clients with training in analytical, problem solving, and entrepreneurial skills. We do not provide instructions on the "whats," "whens," or "hows" of local development. Instead, our assistance to local communities empower them to do the job of development for themselves. Using this approach, NCBA's CLUSA International Program has been successful in building the capacity of local organizations-cooperatives, group enterprises, community health committees, community-based natural resource management organizations and others-to manage their own development in a participatory and sustainable manner.
