Title: Cold Autumn Weather

October 2019 rivaled October 2009 as one of the coldest Octobers in recent memory for the central and western USA. While there will some very warm October temperatures in the far east and southeast, a large part of the lower 48 states had a very cold October.

The graphic below shows the temperature anomalies during the month of October. Notice the extreme cold in the central plains and Rockies. The opposite occurred over the southeastern states, however, on a much smaller scale compared to the area covered by the cold.

So far in 2019 there have been 90 record lows versus just 44 record highs this year. That included the all-time state record low of -38F in Mount Carroll in Illinois on January 31st.

The cold central deepened in October and pushed to the east bringing early snow into the Midwest and harvest delays. October saw 3680 record daily lows and 32 all-time record lows for the month and no all- time record monthly highs (NOAA NCEI).

If think the fall seasons have been getting snowier, you are correct. The trend in snowfall during the fall season you are correct as you can see in the graph below.
