The first drought update of the New Year shows that the majority of the lower 48 states are either in adequate soil moisture status or are at average moisture status.
The graphic below shows drought status conditions as of 1/7/2020. Note we continue to have dry areas in the Pacific Northwest, the Four Corners region as well as parts of the Southern Plains of Texas. Recent rain and snow in the Pacific Northwest have helped to ease the dryness in Washington, Oregon and Idaho.
Persistent areas of dryness continue across southern and parts of eastern Texas. In the coming weeks, chances for rain do look better for parts of the Southern Plains.
On the flip side, there are areas with well above normal soil moisture. The graphic below show soil moisture conditions. Note the solid green area across the Northern Plains and into the Great Lakes. Those areas continue to show the excessive amounts of moisture that fell during the spring and summer of 2019.
