Title: Getting Cold Out West

The coldest weather and the most active winter weather will be found in the western United States over the next couple of weeks.

After a very mild weekend across the Rockies and High Plains with many areas reaching into the 70s, temperatures are going to be much colder this week and next across the central and western areas of the country.

Beef producers in the western states should be prepared a return to winter weather over the next several weeks. The relatively mild and dry January weather will come to an abrupt end beginning this week and colder air from Canada will merge with Pacific storms to bring snow to the mountains and plains as well as much colder temperatures for at least the first half of February.

Temperatures will even fall to below normal in California and snow is possible across Texas and the far Southern Plains before the week is over. The graphic below shows the extent of the first round of cold coming this week. Note the areas of green and blue (far below average temperatures) pushing into the west, Southern Plains and far west. Notice the contrast of warmer than normal temperatures in the southeastern states.
