April About to Turn Colder for Many
April will be turning much colder by this weekend and into next week, especially for the western states and portions of the central U.S. Although temperatures will be mild this week in many areas of the United States, temperatures will turn far below normal by this weekend and into early next week.
April can be a cruel month with wild swings in temperature and precipitation that can bring challenging conditions to livestock interests, especially with lots of young livestock with risk of exposure to colder and wet conditions.
The graphic below shows temperatures relative to normal through April 20. Note that a large part of the U.S. and Canada that are colored in blue and green. The blue and green areas represent colder than normal temperatures with the green showing much below normal temperatures. Beef producers in the blue and green areas should be prepared for much colder temperatures and rain/snow by this weekend and over the following two weeks.
Anyone involved in calving operations, especially in the High Plains, Rockies and far west should be prepared for periods of colder and wet April weather.
