April Cold and Drought Update
Over the weekend, extremely cold April temperatures spread across the United States resulting in a long list of record temperatures from coast to coast. The graphic below shows temperatures relative to normal this past Saturday night. The large area of purple represents temperatures as much as 20 to 30 degrees below normal. However, temperatures over the next week or two should not be as cold.
While the cold temperatures were not welcome the cold did, however, bring more needed precipitation to some areas of the west and south where dry conditions persist.
The latest drought update is shown below. While there remain dry areas, there has been some improvement over the past week in the Southern Plains and some areas of California.
Improvement in southern California, Texas and Pacific Northwest has been noted, while dry conditions are increasing in Florida and portions of eastern Colorado and northeastern New Mexico.
