April Cold Hanging On
After a warm start to April in many areas, April has turned much colder in many areas of the central areas of the nation. Many of you have experienced some late season snows and it will snow in many areas this week.
This return to winter weather has many wishing for warmer, sunny days. The map below shows April temperatures so far relative to normal. In the graphic below, April temperatures relative to normal are displayed.
Note that the far west, desert states and the Great Lakes and East Coast areas have been warm in April. However, an impressive swath of cold has overspread the Rockies and adjacent plains for the month so far. This pattern has a striking resemblance to the wave of colder weather that hit the same areas in February.
For those of you looking for warmth, there is good news and bad news. The bad news is that another week of below normal temperatures are likely in many areas of the central and west. The good news is that most of the nation will be warming up during the last days of April and into the first week of May.
